I agree. Swofford overestimated Miami's leverage.
The ACC could have invited VT, Pitt, and Syracuse (or, gasp, WVU) and waited for the BE to collapse. Miami had no other options. Then the ACC invites Rutgers and UM for a near lockdown of the northeast. And don't tell me Ruts isn't good enough for the ACC when the B1G thinks otherwise.
Swofford adhered to the mindset of the time, which means he was merely an able caretaker. The most bitter pill to swallow is that a handful of TSL posters foresaw the move to 14+ member conferences.
